Army Life

Regimentation and discipline is the name of the game, in BMT.

Daily Routine
0530 - Reveille (in other words, wake up)
0545 - 5BX (Jumping Jacks, High Jumper, Crunches, Push Up, Run)
0615 - Breakfast
End of Breakfast - Area Cleaning
0730 - 1st Parade
0800 - Lessons/PT/Talk
PT is prefaced with Warm Up (Jogging on the Spot, Jumping Jacks, Pectoral Stretch, High Jumper, Side Stretch, Quad Stretch, Hamstring Stretch, Calf Stretch)
1200 - Lunch
1330 - Lessons/PT/Talk
1800 - Dinner
During dinner, you might hear a long whistle blow from a distance. Shout "keep still there" the instant you hear it, or you hear someone else shouting it. Stop everything you're doing, even if you're in a weird half-squat position about to stand up from your table. Wait till the second long whistle blow before you continue.

This is because the flags are being lowered in the parade square.
1900 - Lessons/Briefing/Talk
2200 - Lights out (in other words, sleep)

Commands
I have taken this out and put it in a separate article, available here.

Duty
There is always a lot to be done, and work is distributed in a rotation basis - the Duty system. The first one that you will notice is CDO/CDS: Company Duty Officer/Sergeant. They are in charge of the little things that happen during their duty day, for instance, reporting sick and taking strength.

More relevantly, if your platoon is Company Duty Platoon for the day, you will be required to carry stores to wherever they are required; clean the ground floor, in addition to the standard places on your own floor.

Army Stories
You might have heard of some, you might never have imagined others. Are you curious about why there are never trainings on Thursday nights? Find out why, here.

Water Parades
"Half full water bottle, drink up!"

This is a famous aspect of Army life. For all the intense training you do, you'll find yourself always healthy in Tekong, and I think some credit goes to the hydration regime. The only exception is the water parades during Last Parade, because that really destroys your sleep (~700ml of water just before you go to bed) and you wake up all the time at night to pee.

Every recruit has to recite the SAF Core Values before each drink-up, in the following format:

"The SAF Seven Core Values are:
Loyalty to Country;
Leadership;
Discipline;
Professionalism;
Fighting Spirit;
Ethics;
Care for Soldiers!"
